Prime Minister Mark Rutte met with United States president Donald Trump in Washington on Monday. During his welcome speech Trump spoke about the U.S. and the European Union meeting soon to discuss trade agreements. "If we do work it out that will be positive. And if we don't work it out, that will be positive also", Trump said. Rutte could not agree with that. "No", he interrupted. "That's not positive. We have to work something out."
The United States implemented import duties on steel and aluminum from the European Union, Mexico and Canada. From 6:00 a.m. on Friday, Dutch time, a rate of 25 percent applies for steel and 10 percent for aluminum from these countries. A 56-year-old ship's captain from Leeuwarden was killed on the Maasvlakteweg in the Rotterdam harbor, Sunday afternoon, when a piece of steel fell on the cabin of his barge. His 60-year-old wife and a 45-year-old terminal worker from Ridderkerk were injured.
