20 percent of Dutch people aged 12 and older had trouble sleeping in 2017, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands' Heath Survey.

In the two weeks before the survey, 20 percent of Dutch had trouble falling asleep, struggled to sleep through the night, or woke up too early. Ten percent indicated that they had serious sleep problems. 41 percent of the Dutch with sleep problems say it hampers their daily functioning, causing forgetfulness or poor concentration. Among those with serious sleep problems, 57 percent say it hampers their daily functioning.

Seventeen percent of teenagers in the Netherlands think that they are addicted to social media. Almost half of the teens between the ages of 12 and 18 years indicate that social media has a negative effect on their concentration, sleep and school performance.

According to researcher Gerard Kerkhof, Dutch people sleep too little, especially young women. "We have a problem of epidemic proportions." he says. Poor sleepers have more chance of being overweight, have a shorter lifespan and poorer performance. Kerkhof's urgent advice is to stop using smartphones after 21:00 at night.

Children can become overweight if they don't sleep long enough according to neurologist Hans Hamburger from the WaakSlaapCentrum in the Slotervaartziekenhuis hospital, het Parool reports.
