An increasing number of Dutch prisons are taking part in an experiment in which certain prisoners are given more freedom of movement and responsibility. The idea is to prod prisoners into becoming more self-sufficient. But the prison guards are worried that the experiment is only giving the detainees more freedom to conduct their criminal business within the prison walls, they said to newspaper AD.

A guard at women's prison Ter Peel in Limburg was fired for having a secret relationship with one of the inmates, accoding to a verdict by the court in Den Bosch, RTL Nieuws reports.

The verdict states that the man also had close contact with the inmate's mother. He did not inform his superiors of the forbidden relationship "for fear of a poor outcome".

The man was dismissed for serious dereliction of duty. The court in Den Bosch ruled that the dismissal was justified.

A prison guard working at the prison in Nieuwegein has been suspended because of a sexual affair with one of the prisoners, AD reports.
