The Dutch government no longer wants to take in sick or injured seals, unless they were injured by human action, Minister Carola Schouten of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality wrote to parliament. She is thereby adopting the advice of a committee that researched seal shelter in the Netherlands. The committee concluded that a 'hands off' approach should apply to sick or stranded seals, and that their care must be more professional, ANP reprots.

Seal center Pieterburen rescued a snow white baby seal pup from a road in Den Helder on Christmas Day, the center announced on Facebook.

According to Pieterburen, the seal was separated from its mother. Curious bystanders scared the pup onto the road. In consultation with the local volunteer, it was decided that Pieterburen would take the pup in.

Seal center Pieterburen took in another, very rare, jet black seal pup, the second in a month. This animal also has melanism, the opposite of albinism that turns its coat completely back.

The young seal was found completely exhausted on an artificial sandbank near Egmond aan Zee on Monday. She had some superficial injuries, but nothing more serious, according to ANP. The public will be able to see her from Wednesday.

The seal center Zeehondencreche Pieterburen has a rare new visitor. A pitch black seal pup was discovered on a dike near Pieterburen seal center, very weak, injured and suffering from hypothermia, so the seal center took her in.

The seal sanctuary in Pieterburen is going to return seals to their natural habitat sooner than they have done so far, going against the founder Lenie 't Hart's vision. The staff laid down work since Saturday and threatened with a lawsuit if the supervisory board would not step down.

The seal that recently swam in the canals of Groningen travelled further inland to the province of Drenthe. People saw the animal in the small stream de Hunze, close to Annen, about 40 kilometers from the sea.
