In the coming years, the construction backlog on the number of homes in the Netherlands will be partially made up, according to a forecast by Statistics Netherlands and the Netherlands environmental assessment agency PBL. But it will likely not be enough to eliminate the existing housing shortage completely, the Telegraaf reports.

By 2035 the population of the Netherlands will count 18.3 million people, 1 million more than in 2019, according to Statistics Netherlands and the Netherlands' environmental assessment agency PBL. Most of the population growth will happen in the large and medium-sized cities, and the municipalities around them. But 1 in 5 municipalities will also shrink, especially on the edges of the Netherlands.

Opposition parties in parliament are outraged and want a quick explanation from Rutte about the pressure he exerted on the planning offices to delay this publication, NOS reports.

The Dutch state will not reach its climate- and energy targets for 2020, the Netherlands' environmental assessment agency PBL concluded in its short-term estimate for 2020. The PBL even goes so far to say that the goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent compared to 1990 by next year, as stipulated in the Urgenda ruling, is "out of reach", NU.nl reports.

The Netherlands systems for energy supply are becoming increasingly complex, which also make them more vulnerable to hackers, the Netherlands environmental assessment agency PBL said in a report on digitization on Thursday. This increases the risk of power outages, ANP reports.

Even without a cyber attack, even a small problem can have major consequences in the complicated systems, the PBL warned. The agency calls on the government to intervene. According to the PBL, major power outages can disrupt society.

An increasing number of Dutch tenants find themselves in long-term financial problems, according to a study by the Netherlands' environmental assessment agency PBL. In 2012 a total of 37 percent of tenants were barely able to pay their bills for four years in a row. In 2015 that increased to almost 55 percent, NU.nl reports.

According to the PBL, the increase in households in financial binds can partly be attributed to rising rental prices and housing costs. An influx of new households with relatively low income in the rental sector also plays a role.
