The police are investigating a report of a woman trying to abduct a 7-year-old boy from a supermarket on Amperestraat in Nijkerk on Saturday. "We are investigating exactly what happened and are looking for witnesses", the police write on Facebook.

The boy's parents also wrote about the incident on Facebook, warning other parents in the area to be careful, AD reports. The incident happened at a Lidl supermarket on Amperestraat between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Lidl Nederland will be the first supermarket to stop selling cigarettes. The chain announced that it will phase out sales until no more cigarettes are sold in Lidl Nederland stores by 2022 at the latest, ANP reports.

According to the supermarket chain, the sales figures for cigarettes declined over the past years and cigarette sales are no longer profitable. But Lidl also took measures to discourage the sale of smoking products, like placing all cigarettes out of sight in stores last year.

Consumers association Consumentenbond is very critical about the freshness of shrimp sold in Dutch supermarkets Albert Heijn, Jumbo and Lidl. Jumbo's shrimp also contains more preservatives than is permitted by Dutch law, according to the association, NU.nl reports.

A large fire broke out in an empty supermarket in the Nijmegen shopping center Weezenhof during the early hours of Tuesday morning. A lot of smoke is being released. The fire department advises local residents to stay out of the smoke and keep windows, doors and ventilation closed. People are also instructed to stay away from the area as there may be a gas leak, the Telegraaf reports.

Nearly half of canned and bottled vegetables in the Netherlands contain added sugar, Foodwatch announced after investigating an assortment of products from Albert Heijn, Jumbo, Lidl and Aldi. The food watchdog calls on the government to take action, RTL Nieuws reports.

A massive 70 of the 170 tested canned and bottled vegetables contained added sugar. That is 46 percent of the examined products. "Even in organic vegetables added sugars were found", Foodwatch says.

Supermarket chains Lidl and Jumbo are both taking steps against carcinogenic mineral oils in food packaging. Jumbo added extra requirements to its purchasing conditions when it comes to packaging. And Lidl is imposing even stricter limits banning these mineral oils in packaging, the first supermarket in the Netherlands to do so, watchdog Foodwatch announced on Wednesday.

It is very easy to buy loads of much cheaper fireworks in Germany and smuggle it back to the Netherlands if you time it right. There are hardly any police checks during shit change between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., Dutch newspaper AD reports after speaking with several people who did just that.
