A couple was arrested for creating large bills and multiple hotels and restaurants in the Netherlands, and then leaving without paying. The two, known as 'Henk and Jolanda', turned themselves in to the police in Assen. "Both suspects were taken to the cell complex", the police said to RTL Nieuws.
The branch organization for the Dutch hospitality sector KHN is considering submitting a compensation claim on behalf of restaurants and bars if the government decides to close all smoking areas within two years. The organization calls for a longer transition period, a spokesperson for KHN confirmed to NU.nl.
The Dutch association of hotels KHN is calling for strict, national measures to regulate house sharing through sites like Airbnb and other forms of private rentals to tourists. Platforms like Airbnb are increasingly gaining ground in the Netherlands and often involve illegal rentals by homeowners who work without a license, do not pay taxes and do not comply with the legal regulations, KHN said in a press statement.
Between 10 and 20 percent of Dutch bars, restaurants and clubs fail fire safety checks, the Netherlands' national fire department Brandweer Nederland said to BNR. This is impossible for consumers to know, as only Rotterdam puts fire safety inspection reports online. Safety experts are therefore calling that publishing inspection reports on fire safety becomes the norm in the country, the broadcaster reports
Last year the NVWA fined 172 restaurants in the Netherlands for breaking hygiene and food safety rules more than once. For the first time ever the NVWA published the names of the restaurants, and RTL Nieuws compiled it into an interactive map so consumers can see which of the restaurants are in their neighborhood.
