Fertility doctor Jan Karbaat, who died at age 89 in 2017, used his own sperm to father at least 49 children with clients who used the fertility clinic he worked at, was confirmed by DNA testing, NU.nl reports.
The court in Rotterdam gave a number of children conceived through a sperm donor clinic permission to use the DNA of fertility doctor Jan Karbaat to find out whether he used his own sperm to inseminate their mothers and is therefore their biological father. With this ruling on Wednesday the court in Rotterdam put an end to years of uncertainty for dozens of people, AD reports.
Fertility clinic Geertgen in Elsendorp, Noord-Brabant bought frozen sperm from former fertility clinic Bijdorp Medical Center in Barendrecht in the past, Omroep Brabant reports. The Bijdorp clinic made headlines early this year when parents and children fathered by donors at the clinic came forward with the belief that the clinic's doctor Jan Karbaat is their biological father - he used his own sperm to fertilize patients.
Parents and kids born from donors at former fertility clinic Bijdorp Medical Center in Barendrecht want the court to order that a DNA sample be taken from now deceased doctor Jan Karbaat. They want the DNA to find out for sure whether Karbaat was the donor who fathered the kids, AD reports.
The parents and children were involved in a lawsuit against Karbaat. He died a month before the case went to trial.
