Dutch lawyer Alex van der Zwaan admitted to lying to the team investigating possible Russian interference in the United States presidential elections in 2016, led by American special prosecutor Robert Mueller. Mueller charged Van de Zwaan with lying to the FBI in the investigation, and he pled guilty on Tuesday, the Washington Post reports.
The Tweede Kamer is shocked and outraged by reports from Minister Kasja Ollongren of Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations that Russia and other countries are using fake news to try and influence public opinion in the Netherlands. "That fake accounts influence our democracy is life threateningly dangerous", CDA leader Sybrand Buma said to broadcaster NOS. The CDA and D66 are presenting a set of measures in the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, on Wednesday to prevent this from happening.
Suriname does not appreciate interference from the Netherlands and other countries, Surinamese president Desi Bouterse said in the Surinamese parliament on Tuesday afternoon, local time. "The Surinamese government attaches great importance to its independence", he said in a discussion about not allowing a new Dutch ambassador in the country, ANP reports.
The Ukrainian government did inform the Dutch government about the dangerous situation in the country's airspace before the shooting down of the flight MH17. The Dutch government however did not pass the information forward to the airlines, according to the government's response to parliamentary questions. MPs have asked for clarification on the issue.
