In the near future, violence against a police officer or other first responders will always be punished with a prison sentence. Ministers Ferdinand Grapperhaus of Justice and Security and Sander Dekker for Legal Protection will submit a bill on Monday that prohibits punishing this crime with community service or a fine..

Currently only perpetrators of serious violence and sex crimes are always punished with prison, and never with community service.

Violence was used again police officers working the party scene in Roosendaal and Doetinchem during the early hours of Sunday morning. One officer was injured and a total of eight people were arrested.

"Another weekend with excessive and unacceptable violence against colleagues", National Police chief Erik Akerboom said on Twitter. "In Roosendaal and Doetinchem, among others, things went wrong against colleagues 'just' doing their jobs. Local and national measures are once again necessary."

The parents of murdered children Romy Nieuwburg, Savannah Dekker, and Nick Bood launched a petition calling for higher sentences in juvenile criminal law. Their children were killed by minors, and all three offenders received the maximum juvenile sentence of one or two years of juvenile detention plus youth institutionalized treatment. That is not high enough, according to the parents, NOS reports.

The Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, wants to double the prison sentence for using or possessing a hand grenade from four to eight years. Minister Ferdinand Grapperhaus of Justice and Security approves of this proposal, AD reports.

Minister Ferdinand Grapperhaus of Justice and Security wants stricter legislation to prevent mayors from being threatened. The maximum prison sentence for threatening a public official must be increased from two to four years, and the Minister is also looking into how the government can confiscate more money and possessions from serious criminals, he said in an interview with the Telegraaf.

There must be harsher punishments for traffic violations, according to national traffic officer Achilles Damen. People who cause a serious accident must not get away with only a conditional driver's license suspension and community service, he said in an interview with the Telegraaf.

Dutch politicians want to intensify the fight against texting while driving. The VVD wants the police to always check a smartphone's history after a traffic accident, to see if it was being used during the accident, parliamentarian Remco Dijkstra said to the Telegraaf.

According to the VVD parliamentarian, the police can already check smartphones to see whether a driver had both hands on the wheel, but they rarely do so. The VVD also wants stricter punishments for smartphone use while driving. The party calls for the punishment for this to be the same as for drunk driving.

Police in the Netherlands will begin testing suspects held in violent crimes for drug and alcohol use beginning on Saturday when a new law authorizing the additional testing comes into effect. Before a suspect may be tested, police must already have suspicion that the offense was committed under the influence, the government stated.
