The contract to transit coal through the port of Rotterdam has been extended by 25 years, despite objections from a majority in the Rotterdam municipal council and a number of environmental organizations, NOS reports.

Rotterdam is the largest transit port for coal in Europe. Coal comes from outside Europe, and is then transported through the port to, for example, coal-fired power plants in the Netherlands and abroad. European mass transshipment company EMO carries out the coal transhipment in Rotterdam.

The Netherlands saw an increase in greenhouse gas emissions last year. The total greenhouse gas emissions amounted to 197 billion kilograms of CO2 equivalents, 1 percent more than in 2015, Statistics Netherlands reported on Monday based on preliminary figures.

CO2 equivalents are used to add up the effects of different greenhouse gasses, such as methane and nitrous oxide, on the environment. 1 kilogram of CO2 equivalent is equal to the effect of 1 kilogram of CO2.

Energy consumption in the Netherlands increased by 2 percent in 2016 compared to 2015, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Friday. The use of natural gas saw the biggest increase, mostly due the colder winter than in 2015, according to the stats office.

The CO2 emissions in the Netherlands are rising faster than the economic growth - in the third quarter emissions increased 6.8 percent compared to the same quarter last year. The economy grew with only 1.9 percent.

At least four people were injured Wednesday morning when two different explosions occurred in a biomass power plant in Borssele, Zeeland, the regional safety office reported. The office says all four were hospitalized, however broadcaster Omroep Zeeland says two people received serious injuries and were rushed to an area hospital and the others were treated at the scene.

The Netherlands contributed 8.1 percent more CO2 emissions in the first quarter of 2015 than a year before, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reported on Wednesday. Dutch energy companies produced delivered more energy than a year before due to increased demand from abroad, which lead to much of the emissions increase.

According to a report, a majority of Dutch voters as well as ruling parties VVD and PvdA, are in favor of establishing mandatory goals for the encouragement of clean energy and energy saving, Blik Op Nieuws reports.

Due to the mild weather this year, there was less CO2 emissions in the second quarter than a year ago. According to figures from the Central Bureau for Statistics (CBS) Netherlands, emissions dropped with 0.9 percent, NU.nl reports.

Old coal operated power plants are closed, and probably there will no new coal operated power plants being built. For groups of citizens who wish to jointly generate electricity by solar panels there there will be tax advantages. This are some of the elements of a draft version of the National Energy Agreement. This was reported by the NIS.

Trade unions, employers, environmental organizations and other interest groups, are talking, led by the SER, for months now about such an agreement.
