The Netherlands must considerably accelerate the pace at which it is installing electric car charging points, according to ALD Automotive Nederland, the Dutch branch of Europe's largest leasing company. If more charging points aren't installed rapidly, the country will face a massive shortage, Jeroen Kruisweg of ALD Automotive Nederland said to the Telegraaf.

The governments of Noord-Holland, Flevoland and Utrecht are hoping to stimulate electric driving with more charging points. A total of 20 thousand new charging points will be installed in the three provinces, which put out a call for bids on the project on Monday.

"Twenty thousand new charging points are a great next step and will really help to encourage electric driving," said Utrecht provincial politician Huib van Essen. He said his province alone needs at least another four thousand charging points in the coming years.

Dutch retailers' association Detailhandel Nederland is calling on the Dutch government not to be too strict when implementing new European rules on electric car charging stations, ANP reports.

The new rules oblige retailers to have a minimum number of electric car chargers on their parking lots. But the association considers this obligation "superfluous". The association asks the government to make use of the room the European Union gives member states to fulfill objects at national level in their own way.

Shell is expanding its range of electric car charging points with the acquisition of NewMotion. The Amsterdam based company is one of Europe's largest players in the field of charging stations. The amount involved in the acquisition was not disclosed, ANP reports.

NewMotion has over 30 thousand charging points at individuals' homes and companies in the Netherlands, Germany, France and the United Kingdom. The company also issued more than 100 thousand charging passes, which gives customers access to around 50 thousand charging points in 25 European countries.

Before the end of the year Shell plans to equip 20 of its petrol stations in the Netherlands with rapid car charging points. In this way the Dutch oil and gas giant wants to provide for a growing need - the number of electric cars in the Netherlands is increasing rapidly, ANP reports.

Nuon will soon be charging an hourly rate for charging your car at one of the 1,240 charging points the company will be installing in Brabant and Limburg over the next two years. The company hopes that this will help solve the problem of overcrowded charging points, the Volkskrant reports.

A thousand new charging points for electric cars will be built in The Hague to stimulate electric driving. In recent years the number of people opting for such environmentally friendly cars in has increased seven-fold. There are currently about 1,500 electric cars in The Hague.
