For the first time in years, the number of burglaries in the Netherlands increased in 2016. Last year a total of 64 thousand burglary claims were filed with insurers, compared to 61 thousand in 2015, according to figures from the Dutch association of insurers VNV, ANP reports.

The Breda police arrested a 24-year-old man for involvement in his 7-month-old son's death last week, RTL Nieuws reports.

Emergency services responded to the young family's home last week Sunday. The baby boy was admitted to hospital in a critical condition. He died the next day. An autopsy revealed that he did not die of natural causes. A team of 20 detectives were put on the case.

A daycare on Liesboslaan in Breda was evacuated on Wednesday afternoon after someone reported that there was a bomb in the building. Surrounding homes were also evacuated, and a number of streets were closed. It turned out to be a false alarm, the police said in a statement. 

The police received the bomb threat around 2:00 p.m. The 60 kids and their carers were evacuated and taken to a nearby hotel, a police spokesperson said to NU.nl. An hour later they were allowed to return to the daycare.

A total of 25 municipalities have signed up so far to take part in the Rutte III government's experiment with regulated cannabis cultivation, NOS reports. The government wants to start the experiment next year by letting eight to ten municipalities regulate the marijuana cultivation for their regions.

A 15-year-old boy from Amsterdam and an 18-year-old boy from Duiven were arrested for ordering a firearm, with ammunition and silencer, on the dark web. The two were remanded into custody on Friday by the Rotterdam magistrate, NU.nl reports.

The 15-year-old was arrested on October 25th, when he went to pick up the weapon at the older boy's instruction in Breda. An undercover police officer was waiting for him at the address, and arrested him. The Duiven boy was arrested at the same time on Amsterdam Central Station, where he was waiting for his friend to return with the firearm.

A reunion planned at the Stedelijk Gymnasium in Breda for Saturday, was canceled after the school received a threatening email. The school felt the threat in the email was serious enough to report to the police, rector Pieter Breuer said to AD.

"It's only one line, but that was enough for us to go to the police. They advised far-reaching security measures. After internal consultation, I decided to postpone the reunion. We expect a thousand guest and we want to keep it festive. That can not be done in this way", the rector said.

Seven shots were fired at 32-year-old Harib A. in front of his home on Jan David Zocherstraat in Breda early on Thursday morning. Six bullets hit him. A. knows that he is very lucky to have survived the attempted assassination, but has no idea why he was targeted, his lawyer Menno Buntsma said to RTL Nieuws.

An autumn storm that hit the Netherlands on Thursday mostly caused damage in the east and north of the country. The biggest disruption caused by the storm, was when tents set up for horse event CSI Salland were blown down in Mariënheem, sending a number of expensive horses running, RTL Nieuws reports.

A man was shot several times in front of a home on Jan David Zocherstraat in Breda early on Thursday morning. He was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. The gunman is still at large, Omroep Brabant reports.

A neighbor told the broadcaster that she heard "three clear shots" around 00:45 a.m. and then a car speeding away.

3,800 kilos of cocaine intercepted at the port of Antwerp, Sept 2017

Two suspects were arrested in Breda on Monday after the authorities intercepted 3,800 kilograms of cocaine in the port of Antwerp. The suspects are a 56-year-old man from Oosterhout and a 39-year-old man from Roosendaal, the Dutch police said in a statement. 

The cocaine was found in a sea container during a customs check at the port of Antwerp over the weekend. The drugs were hidden among a load of bananas from Columbia. According to the police, the cocaine has a street value of 100 million euros.

Two armed men robbed the Players Casino on Ginnekenweg in Breda on Wednesday night. No one was injured. The perpetrators are still at large.

The armed duo came into the gambling hall around 11:00 p.m. and forced everyone inside to lie down on the ground, according to the police. The robbers threatened an employee with a firearm and forced the employee to hand over money. They then fled on a dark colored scooter towards Zuidelijke Rondweg.

A woman was stabbed and critically injured in Breda on Wednesday morning. The perpetrator fled after the incident, the police said on Twitter.

The stabbing happened around the porch of a home on the crossing of Merwedestraat and Rijnstraat, according to newspaper AD. The police closed the street with crime scene tape for investigation.

The injured woman was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. The motive for the stabbing is unclear.

A large part of the Burgemeester van Sonsbeeck park in Breda has been closed off to the public with crime scene tape since 5:00 a.m. on Thursday morning. A number of police officers are investigating a sex crime in the park, according to the Telegraaf.

Exactly what the officers are looking for, is unclear. To protect the privacy of the victim, the police will not comment on the case.

According to reporter Eva de Schipper, two bicycles can be seen in different areas inside the closed off part of the park. The police are investigating the bushes behind one of the bicycles.

Thieves stole 14 lifelike sex dolls, worth around 25 thousand euros in total, from the showroom of exclusive sex shop MyTenga in Breda last week. "They only left the couches", shop owner Niels van der Voort said to Omroep Brabant. "All the dolls are gone. Even the old kettle and the six-year-old retro-reflective camera they took with them."

An 18-year-old girl from Breda will not get higher marks on her French exam after she challenged the results in court, the court in Utrecht ruled on Monday, Omroep Brabant reports.

The VWO student scored 0.05 points too few on one question to pass the French exam, and thereby also failed her diploma. The French exam was already under fire due to a number of mistakes.

Controversy arose around the bodies used in the Real Human Bodies exhibition, which is set to start in Breda on Thursday and in Eindhoven from September 15th. There is uncertainty about exactly where the bodies used in the exhibition came from, according to RTL Nieuws.

The exhibition consists of real human bodies with the skin removed, skeletons and organs, according to the broadcaster.

A SWAT team arrested an aggressive man in Breda on Sunday night after he spent hours barricaded in a stranger's shed on Pijnboomstraat, AD reports.

The man forced himself into the people's home around 7:30 p.m. The residents, who do not know the man, called the police. The man locked himself into the residents' shed and threatened to hurt himself with a screwdriver.

The police arrested two men from Breda in Etten-Leur after a short car chase during the early hours of Tuesday morning. In their car officers found a sword and two batons, the police said in a statement. 

Officers signaled the two men to stop around 1:30 a.m. They ignored this and sped away. The police gave chase. On Moerdijkse Postbaan the car flew off the road and came to a halt. Neither of the men were injured.

A "scarily high" 31 percent of sushi meals that are delivered to customers' homes contain too much bacteria, according to consumers association Consumentenbond. This is caused by poor hygiene in the preparation of the meals, the association concludes after testing 160 sushi samples from 20 restaurants in five cities, NU.nl reports.

Poor hygiene standards include using dirty cutting boards and employees not washing their hands before working with the food. In many cases the delivered sushi was fresh, the Consumentenbond added.

A man was found critically injured in a car on Isenburgstraat in Breda on Thursday night. The police believe he was assaulted. The injured man was taken to hospital, AD reports.

Witnesses saw two perpetrators flee around 11:10 p.m. The car the man was found in was parked in a parking ot near the Broekakker. The car's windows were broken and its tailgate stood open.
