The Lingewaard town hall, located in Bemmel, will be closed for months due to damage sustained when a during the early hours of Wednesday morning. The public hall and areas behind the counters were destroyed, the Telegraaf reports.

A car crashed into the town hall of Lingewaard, located in the Gelderland village of Bemmel, during the early hours of Wednesday morning. The car contained two gas bottles, one of which exploded and caused a fire. The driver was killed, according to the police. 

The killed motorist was found "in the vicinity" of the car, a spokesperson for the fire department said to NOS. The fire caused major damage to the town hall.

A 49-year-old man was seriously injured when three young men beat him up after allegedly throwing fireworks at the victim and his family early on New Year’s Day. “The man has sustained considerable injuries to his head,” police said in a statement. He was admitted to an area hospital.

It all started at about 2 a.m. when the man was walking with his wife and two teenaged children on Van Nispenlaan in Bemmel, Gelderland, police said in a statement. The suspects were lighting fireworks there, and at one point they threw fireworks towards the family, the report stated.

A number of people in Bemmel could not believe their luck when the ATM in the Jumbo supermarket started giving out 50 euro notes instead of 20 euro notes. But that luck has run out. Everyone who got too much money from the ATM has to pay it back in two weeks, or Jumbo will press charges

Several of the Albert Heijn franchise owners have decided to defy the supermarket chain's national policy to remove Zwarte Piet from advertisements.

Franchise owner Schuytgraaf from Arnhem stated of Facebook that Zwarte Piet will be found in his store in Elst during the coming months. This status update received more than 2 thousand likes. "On 5 December Zwarte Piet will be walking through the store as usual," he says.

As far as franchiser Hans Geveling is concerned, nothing will change in Albert Heijn stores in Huissen, Bemmel, Gendt and Druten.
