This is impossible for consumers to know, as only Rotterdam puts fire safety inspection reports online. The hospitality sector is feeling the Netherlands' improving economy. In the third quarter, the turnover for hotels, restaurants, snack bars and cafes increased 2.6 percent compared to the previous sector, Statistics Netherlands revealed on Wednesday. Compared to the third quarter of last year, the hospitality sector saw 8.8 percent of growth.

This is the biggest turnover increase in this sector since 2007, according to Statistics Netherlands.

People are finally eating at Dutch restaurants and staying over in hotels again after the financial crisis in 2008, but bars and pubs are still struggling. Most parts of the traditional hospitality industry are seeing recovery in their turnover volumes, but bars are more than 25 percent below the level of 2007, according to figures released by Statistics Netherlands on Monday.

The police unions have threatened to use heavier means of pressure if the Tweede Kamer, lower house of parliament, doesn't make extra money available for better a collective bargaining agreement. About 26 percent of nightclubs and bars still do not comply with the ban on smoking. This is according to a study done by the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority in September and October last year. The study was done among approximately 900 establishments in the hospitality industry.

Bars and restaurants will all have to comply with the smoking ban after Parliament voted with a majority of 76 against 70. This means that small bars who have been able to hold out up to now, will also be removing ashtrays from tables.

Amsterdam will be keeping a close watch on its entertainment sector next week Tuesday, when the city hosts the Champions League football match between Ajax and Barcelona. Two separate letters went to businesses on Friday –one on behalf of Mayor Eberhard van der Laan and one from the police officers in charge of the Wallen Area-, asking them to be watchful as well.
