The number of bankruptcies in the Netherlands last year fell to its lowest level since 2008, Statistics Netherlands announced on Monday. In 2016 a total of 4,396 companies were declared bankrupt - nearly a fifth less than in 2015 and almost 4 thousand fewer than when bankruptcies peaked in 2013.

Last month 328 companies and institutions were declared bankrupt, 88 fewer than in November 2016.

Economists at ING expect fewer bankruptcies next year. According to a report published by the ING Economic Bureau on Tuesday, the number of businesses filing for bankruptcy is expected to decrease by 10 percent in 2017 compared to 2016. The Dutch retail sector also seems to be reviving.

Should the United Kingdom decide to leave the European Union, the number of Dutch companies that go bankrupt could increase by 2.0 to 2.5 percent, according to estimations from credit insurer Euler Hermes. The Brexit could also dampen economic growth in the Netherlands over the next three years - the economic growth will be 1.5 to 2.4 percent lower

The economic situation in the Netherlands looked slightly better in August 2015 than in July, according to Statistics Netherlands' Business Cycle Tracer. Almost all indicators on the Tracer performed better in August than their long-term trends.

The recovering Dutch economy is good news for Rabobank. In the first half of this year the bank booked a profit of 1.5 billion euros, an increase of 41 percent compared to last year.

The number of bankruptcies in the Dutch economy is expected to fall by 15 percent over the course of 2015, according to credit insurance firm Atradius. The number is decreasing because of the improving conditions in the economy, but still remains relatively high in construction and non-food retail and even rises in some of the sectors.

The number of bankruptcies in the Netherlands decreased by 19 percent in the first quarter of this year. Freelancers in particular are doing well.

The economic bureau of ING writes that the number of bankruptcies expected in businesses this year will drop with 15 percent to around 8000, compared to around 9400 last year.
