No change in the number of bankruptcies in January compared to December

The number of bankruptcies in the Netherlands stayed at the same level in January as it was in the previous month when corrected for court hearing days. Statistics Netherlands reported that the number of bankruptcies was below the same time as last year.

There was a significant increase in the number of bankruptcies in 2024. Statistics Netherlands reported last month that almost 4,300 companies were declared bankrupt. That is an increase of 30 percent compared to 2023.

Monthly figures can fluctuate. Not corrected for court hearing days, the most official bankruptcy declarations came in January. More than 300 businesses and institutions were declared bankrupt during this month.

Of all the sectors, it was the trade sector that had the most bankruptcies, with 67. This is 16 percent more than in December. The construction sector also had a significant increase. There were 51 bankruptcies in that sector compared to 39 the month before, according to Faillissementsdossier. The catering sector also saw a slight increase, from 26 bankruptcies in December to 33 bankruptcies in January.

In contrast, the number of bankruptcies in specialist business services fell sharply, from 45 in December to 26 in January. The financial sector and rental and other business services also saw a decline in the number of bankruptcies
