Online supermarket Picnic growing fast, but still suffering losses due to investments

Picnic significantly increased its revenue last year, with more customers and an expansion of its fleet of electric delivery vehicles, the online supermarket reported on Monday in its annual report. However, Picnic once again recorded a multi-million euro loss due to the company’s continued investments.

Annual revenue rose by nearly a quarter to over €1.9 billion. The majority of the revenue came from the Netherlands. Picnic operates in 690 cities in the Netherlands, Germany, and France. The number of customers increased by 700,000 in 2025 to 3.6 million.

Picnic posted a net loss of over €272 million. This is slightly higher than the loss the company suffered in 2024. Picnic continues to expand its operations in Germany and France and has invested in automation. Opening automated distribution centers, such as the one in Oberhausen in Germany, entails high short-term costs, Picnic said.

Co-founder Joris Beckers looks back on a “successful year” for Picnic, in which the online supermarket celebrated its tenth anniversary.

For this year, the company expects revenue to exceed €2.3 billion. To achieve this growth, Picnic expects to make significant further investments.

The online supermarket raised €430 million in a financing round from existing investors at the end of last year. The majority of that money was earmarked for expansion in Germany.
