Video: Fire at asylum shelter for children in Limburg town; Police suspect arson
A fire broke out at an asylum shelter for unaccompanied children in Cadier en Keer, Limburg, on Monday night. The police suspect arson and have arrested a suspect. It is unclear whether the suspect is a resident of the shelter or someone from outside.
The fire broke out at the shelter on Pater Kustersweg at around 10:35 p.m. Because there was a lot of smoke and children live in the building, the emergency services responded in large numbers.
The fire brigade managed to extinguish the fire within an hour, Veiligheidsregio Zuid-Limburg reported. The emergency services evacuated the shelter due to the smoke. No injuries were reported.
“A lot of smoke was released during this fire, and as a result, the response was scaled up so that more fire department colleagues could come to the scene to help ventilate the building,” the Veiligheidsregio said.
Firefighters were still taking measurements inside the shelter at around 12:30 a.m. After that, the children were allowed back inside.
