Events take measures as heat continues; Temps above 30 expected Tuesday

The warm weather on Whit Sunday prompted many events to take extra measures to protect visitors against the heat. Temperatures hit a summery 25 or higher in many places on Sunday, and thermometers will keep climbing in the coming days. The KMNI expects maximums to top 30 degrees tomorrow.

The Red Cross has set up a control room at the Fietselfstedentocht in Friesland today, from which aid workers can quickly reach cyclists in distress. The Stepelfstedentocht in the province on Sunday also had extra heat measures, including reminders to participants to wear sunscreen, stay hydrated, and seek shade. Support buses also accompanied the group with extra water, Omrop Fryslan reported.

In Maastricht, the full marathon was canceled on Sunday, but the half-marathon still took place. The Opwekking festival in Biddinghuizen placed extra water points and sunscreen dispensers on the festival grounds, NOS reported.

The warm weather also had plenty of people flocking to beaches and other recreational areas. In Scheveningen, the beaches were so busy that the parking lots were full and the municipality had to urge people to come by bicycle or public transport, according to Omroep West.

Two people died at recreational lakes on Sunday. A German man drowned in Lake Leukermeer in Well, Limburg. And a person died after being resuscitated at the recreation park Het Hulsbeek in Oldenzaal, Overijssel. According to the police, this person was pulled from the water, but died a natural death and did not drown.

Today will be dry, warm, and sunny, with maximums climbing to 29 degrees in the south. On Tuesday, many places will cross the tropical threshold of 30 degrees Celsius, with some places in the south even reaching 32 degrees.

If De Bilt hits 30 degrees tomorrow, it will mark the first official tropical day of the year. The first regional tropical day was yesterday, when thermometers hit 30 degrees in Ell, Limburg, at around 2:40 p.m.
