Goalkeeper Ronald Koeman Jr keeps Telstar in Eredivisie with dramatic late penalty
Telstar confirmed their survival in the Eredivisie with a dramatic victory in Volendam on Sunday. The IJmuiden club won thanks to an 89th-minute penalty taken by their keeper, Ronald Koeman Jr. Volendam will play in the relegation playoffs due to the loss.
The fixture list had set up a tantalizing final game. Telstar were a point ahead of Volendam going into the match between the two sides, who both got promoted from the Keuken Kampioen Divisie last season.
It was the best possible start for Volendam as they took the lead after just a minute played. Juninho Bacuna played a pass into the path of striker Anthony Descotte, who smashed it hard and low into the far corner.
Where Volendam started the first half with a goal, it was Telstar who scored in the final minutes of the game. A cross from Jeff Hardeveld was nodded into the net by center back Danny Bakker to ensure that the halftime score is 1-1.
Telstar were awarded a penalty in the 85th minute when a clumsy challenge by Yannick Leliendal resulted in the spot kick after a VAR review. To the surprise of most, it was Telstar’s keeper Ronald Koeman Jr, son of the Dutch national team manager, who stepped up. Koeman made no mistake with his finish, becoming the first goalkeeper to score in the Eredivisie since Martin Hansen found the net for ADO Den Haag in August 2015.
Telstar will have to face next season without their manager, Anthony Correia, as he has agreed to become the next manager of FC Utrecht. FC Volendam will face Willem II in the playoffs to attempt to remain in the Eredivisie.
