Police shoot man after reported firearm threat in Rotterdam

Police in Rotterdam shot and wounded a man Monday evening after responding to a report of a firearm threat in the Hoogvliet district, while national investigators opened a separate inquiry into whether officers acted properly.

The shooting happened around 6:15 p.m. on Middenbaan Noord during a police operation used to approach potentially dangerous suspects, authorities said.

The man was taken to a hospital in critical condition, police said.

Authorities have not disclosed what led up to the shooting, the identity of the man or details about the reported threat involving a firearm. Police said the circumstances remain under investigation.

The Rijksrecherche, the Dutch agency responsible for investigating incidents involving police use of force, is examining whether officers acted correctly.

According to Rijnmond emergency service correspondents, two ambulances and a trauma helicopter were dispatched to the scene after the shooting.

Images from the location showed a firearm lying in the street, though it remains unclear whether the man had been holding it before he was shot.
