Police officer dies at Zandvoort police station; Circumstances unclear
An officer has died following a "very serious incident" at the police station in Zandvoort, police stated. The police are not disclosing the nature of the incident, RTL reported.
According to De Zandvoortse Courant, around 8:45 PM, a report was issued about a possible shooting on the Hogeweg at a site that later turned out to be the police station. Emergency services arrived in large numbers at the scene.
A few minutes later, the report was withdrawn. According to a police spokesperson, the press alert should not have been sent out. At that moment, the police declined to confirm or deny that shots had actually been fired, De Zandvoortse Courant reported.
The spokesperson, however, confirmed that something had occurred at the police station, saying it involved an “internal incident.”
The police said they are deeply affected by the loss. “Our thoughts go out to his loved ones and colleagues. We wish them strength during this difficult time,” said Hamit Karakus, Police Chief of the North Holland unit.
“This loss deeply affects us as individuals and as an organization, and we sympathize intensely with his partner, family, and everyone who knew him.”
The Public Prosecution Service says it will not investigate the incident, as it has reportedly found no reason for a criminal investigation.
