More reports of domestic violence, child abuse last year
There were again more reports of suspected domestic violence and child abuse last year, Veilig Thuis and Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reported based on preliminary figures. The advice and reporting center for domestic violence received 136,000 reports, compared to 129,000 a year earlier.
Veilig Thuis also provided advice to more victims, bystanders, and professionals than a year earlier. In 2025, it provided advice regarding what to do about suspected domestic violence or child abuse 179,000 times. A year earlier, it was 154,000 times.
Veilig Thuis is the national advice and reporting center for domestic violence and child abuse. Victims, bystanders, and professionals can contact the center if they suspect someone is being hurt at home. Veilig Thuis can then provide advice on how to proceed.
If the situation is too complex, a formal report can be filed. Veilig Thuis then engages a local care provider for professional assistance or enters the dialogue itself.
Almost all reports came from professionals. Over two-thirds of these came from the police. About 7 percent came from the healthcare sector, and 5 percent from education. People from the victims’ immediate vicinity, such as family, friends, or neighbors, made 8 percent of the reports.
Approximately half of all reports and advice last year concerned suspicions of child abuse. Over a third were about possible violence by partners or ex-partners.
