The Rutte III government's plans for a new tax system, will result in 5.4 million workers in the Netherlands paying less income tax, and 2.1 million workers paying more income tax, Statistics Netherlands reported on Monday after questions from various media sources.

Of all the countries in the European Union, the Netherlands spends the most money on importing insects, Statistics Netherlands revealed on Thursday. In the first half of this year, the Netherlands spent 8.2 million euros on importing live insects, five times more than in 2012.

Two million women in the Netherlands are not economically independent and are therefore financially vulnerable, Statistics Netherlands reported on Wednesday based on figures from 2016. About a million men find themselves in the same position.

Of the financially vulnerable men, 27 percent have paid work, but earn less than a welfare benefit. The same is true for 35 percent of financially vulnerable women. 28 percent of the men receive a welfare benefit and 21 percent receive an occupational disability benefit. Among the women it is 17 and 13 percent.

Registered crime in the Netherlands dropped for the second year in a row in 2016, according to the criminal law and enforcement report published by Statistics Netherlands, scientific research and documentation center WODC and the Judicial Council on Monday. The police registered fewer crimes and arrested fewer suspects in 2016 than in 2015, resulting a decrease in cases through almost the entire criminal law chain.

Women in the Netherlands working in flexible employment wait longer to start a family than women with permanent employment contracts, according to a study by Statistics Netherlands on behalf of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment.

In the period between 2003 and 2015, the stats office looked at a group of 25 thousand childless women between the ages of 18 and 45 who have a partner. The stats office specifically looked at which of these women had a child within the first year of joining the working population.

A fifth of Dutch companies with at least 10 employees, dealt with the consequences of a cyber attack last year, Statistics Netherlands revealed in a study on IT incidents on Monday. Companies in the financial- and energy sectors are most vulnerable to cyber attacks, according to the stats office.

Over 12 percent of Dutch girls between the ages of 15 and 18 years have been bullied online, almost twice as many as boys in the same age group, Statistics Netherlands reported based on figures from the Safety Monitor. The total number of Netherlands residents over the age of 15 that faced cyber bullying remained stable at 3 percent between 2014 and 2016. That is about 400 thousand people, ANP reports.

The average purchasing power of Dutch increased by 2.7 percent last year, the strongest increase since 2007, Statistics Netherlands announced on Friday. Despite this, one in three Dutch saw their purchasing power decrease, NU.nl reports. 

The increase can be attributed to a package of debt relief measures and an average of 1.8 percent increase in collective bargaining agreement wages, according to the stats office. The 0.3 percent increase in consumer prices, pushed purchasing power down somewhat.

Income disparities in the Netherlands remained virtually unchanged since 2001, despite the financial crisis and the aging population, Statistics Netherlands reported on Thursday.

Disparities in income from salary, profit and wealth rose. But this rise was reversed by increasing redistribution through social benefits, taxes and premiums. And while increased labor participation among women reduced the inequality for redistribution, the aging population and economic crisis increased this inequality, according to the stats office.

Eight out of ten still-working millionaires in the Netherlands are self-employed, Statistics Netherlands reported on Tuesday. They can mainly be found in agriculture, trade, financial services and business services. 19 percent of still working millionaires are farmers.

This is based on Statistics Netherlands data dated 1 January 2015. On that date the Netherlands counted 106 thousand households with a capital of one million euros or more. About two thirds of these millionaires had work as the main source of income. The rest consists mainly of retirees.

The number of companies in the Netherlands being declared bankrupt continues to decrease. In August 39 fewer companies were declared bankrupt than in July, Statistics Netherlands reported on Monday. The number of bankruptcies in the Netherlands is now at its lowest level since 2001. 

A total of 258 companies and institutions, excluding sole proprietorships, were declared bankrupt in August. The trade sector saw the most bankruptcies with 67, followed by financial institutions (35) and the construction industry (25).

Last year the Public Prosecutor decided to drop 20 percent of all completed criminal cases, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released. Ten years ago, 10 percent of criminal cases were dropped, ANP reports.

A group of Amsterdam residents marched through the Kinkerbuurt on Thursday night to protest against the gentrification of Amsterdam West and the problems caused by tourism, Het Parool reports.

They carried banners and megaphones, shouting slogans like "Amsterdam, not for sale!" and "Who's city, our city!". The procession stopped at various locations, including at Jan Pieter Heijestraat, where there are plans to build a long-stay hotel with apartments, instead of housing.

The Netherlands saw an increase in greenhouse gas emissions last year. The total greenhouse gas emissions amounted to 197 billion kilograms of CO2 equivalents, 1 percent more than in 2015, Statistics Netherlands reported on Monday based on preliminary figures.

CO2 equivalents are used to add up the effects of different greenhouse gasses, such as methane and nitrous oxide, on the environment. 1 kilogram of CO2 equivalent is equal to the effect of 1 kilogram of CO2.

Hotels, restaurants and bars in the Netherlands saw a turnover increase of nearly 2 percent in the second quarter of this year, compared to the first quarter, Statistics Netherlands reported on Thursday. The hospitality industry's turnover has been increasing steadily for four years.

All parts of the hospitality industry saw a turnover increase in the second quarter. Fast food restaurants - which includes snack bars, lunchrooms, meal deliverers and ice cream shops - saw the biggest growth at 2.5 percent.

The number of people in the Netherlands receiving welfare benefits continues to rise, Statistics Netherlands reported on Thursday. Between June 2016 and June 2017, this group increased by 12 thousand people to a total of 472 thousand welfare recipients. The increase is smaller than in previous years, the stats office added.

Compared to other EU countries, people in the Netherlands are relatively often employed, but at the same time work almost the least number of hours per week, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Tuesday.

Of the 12.8 million people in the Netherlands between the ages of 15 and 75 years, 65.8 percent had paid work last year, according to the stats office. That is roughly seven out of ten men and six out of ten women. In the European Union, only Sweden, Germany and Estonia have higher employment rates.

Women in the Netherlands are more likely to give birth during the week than on the weekend, according to Statistics Netherlands' analysis of the birth and mortality patterns in the country last year. The stats office partly attributes this to the fact that more women give birth in hospitals - less than a quarter of last year's births happened at home.

Remarkably, there are also fewer deaths in the Netherlands over the weekends than on weekdays. In 2016 only 7 percent of the deaths happened on a Sunday and there is a peak of deaths on Fridays. It is not clear why.

Tourism is playing a bigger and bigger part in the Dutch economy, Statistics Netherlands reported on Monday. Since 2010, tourist spending in the Netherlands increased by 27 percent. Last year the tourism sector generated an added value of 24.8 billion euros to the Dutch economy, over 43 percent more than the 17.3 billion euros generated in 2010.

The number of children in the Netherlands growing up in a family that receives welfare benefits increased by 2.1 percent to a total of 230 thousand last year, Statistics Netherlands reported on Friday. This number increased every year since 2012. 

More than two thirds of children who lived on welfare last year had an immigration background. Half of this group fall under the "other non-western category", compared to 39 percent in 2012. In this category the stats office includes all non-western countries except Morocco, Suriname, Turkey, Aruba and the former Dutch Antilles.

As in previous years, the number of murders committed in the Netherlands decreased in 2016, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Friday. Last year a total of 110 people were killed by violence in the country, ten fewer than in 2015. The victims were 76 men and 34 women.

The number of murder victims halved since the start of this century, both in men and women.

The Dutch government collected 25.3 billion euros in environmental taxes and levies last year, 3 percent more than in 2015, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Monday. Households carried almost two thirds of that amount.

Nearly 40 percent of Dutch employees live and work in the same municipality, according to figures for 2015 Statistics Netherlands published on Thursday. The average Dutch worker work 22.6 kilometers from their home. Workers in the big cities and people living on the outskirts of the Netherlands, such as on the Wadden Islands, in particular tend to live where they work, NU.nl reports.
