The number of teenagers committing suicide in the Netherlands is increasing alarmingly. Last year the number teens who died by suicide nearly doubled, Statistics Netherlands reported on Tuesday.

In total 1,917 people committed suicide in the Netherlands last year, 23 more than in 2016. The number of teens between the ages of 10 and 20 that died by suicide increased from 48 in 2016 to 81 last year.

The number of vehicles on Dutch roads increased slightly over the past year. At the start of this year there were 12.5 million registered vehicles in the Netherlands, 2 percent more than in early 2017, Statistics Netherlands reported.

Almost all types of vehicles saw an increase, delivery vans in particular. At the start of 2018 there were more than 883 thousand delivery vans in the country, an increase of 5 percent compared to a year earlier.

Nearly half of Dutch children between the ages of 4 and 12 years did not get enough exercise last year, according to figures Statistics Netherlands and public health institute RIVM released on Friday. According to the , kids in this age group must get "moderately intense" exercise, like walking, cycling or playing outside at least 1 hour per day.

House prices in the Netherlands reached record high in May, rising above the peak in August 2008 to the highest level ever, according to figures Statistics Netherlands and the Land Registry released on Thursday.

Last month the average price to buy a house in the Netherlands was 283,945 euros, 9 percent higher than a year earlier. This only includes existing owner-occupied homes, new construction is not included in these figures. In April house prices were also almost 9 percent higher than they were in April 2017.

Dutch people see speeding, dog poop and parking problems as the biggest sources of nuisance in their neighborhoods, according to the Safety Monitor that Statistics Netherlands published on Monday.

Over a quarter of Dutch, 26.7 percent, consider speeding the biggest problem. 17.9 percent think that dealing with dog poop should be a priority. And 15.4 percent are annoyed by parking problems.

Meat prices in the Netherlands increased significantly last year. On average meat was 3.8 percent more expensive in 2017 than in 2016, the biggest price increase since 2001, according to figures Statistics Netherlands published on Thursday.

The price of poultry increased the most during the past year, with 4.7 percent. Pork and meat products like smoked, dried or salted meat were 4.2 percent more expensive. The price of mutton and goat meat increased by 3.3 percent, and beef was 2.7 percent more expensive.

The number of people in the Netherlands on welfare declined for the second quarter in a row compared to a year earlier. At the end of March 459 thousand people under retirement age received a welfare benefit, 13 thousand fewer than in the same period a year earlier, Statistics Netherlands reported on Thursday.

The decline only applies to people under the age of 45. The number of people over the age of 45 receiving a benefit increased by two thousand compared to a year ago. According to the stats office, this is partly due to the increase of the retirement age to 66 years.

Dutch people's confidence in each other and in the institutions increased almost across the board last year, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Monday. The Dutch have most confidence in the police with 74.5 percent saying they trust the police, and least in the church with only 31.2 percent.

Illegal cannabis cultivation in the Netherlands is far larger than previously thought, Statistics Netherlands said in a revision of old economic figures. According to the stats office, many more illegal weed growers remain below the police radar than previously assumed.

In 2015 the stats office assumed that 40 percent of illegal cannabis cultivators were caught by the police. But new information from the National Police indicate that its more realistic to assume that around 20 percent of weed growers are caught.

The share of Dutch exports in the world trade increased over the past two years. Last year the Netherlands' exports accounted for 3.2 percent of world trade, Statistics Netherlands reported on Monday.

The Dutch share in world trade declined in the years after the credit crisis from around 3.5 percent to 3 percent. In 2016 there was a turning point, partly due to Dutch exports gaining strength, partly due to the total value of world trade declining. In 2017 the value of world trade increased, and Dutch exports increased even faster.

The Dutch economy grew by 3.2 percent last year, and more people in the Netherlands had work than ever before. Despite this, the growth in net disposable income is still lagging behind, Statistics Netherlands reported on Tuesday.

In 2017 net real disposable income - the amount Dutch have left to spend after all premiums and taxes were deducted, corrected for inflation - grew by 1.5 percent. This was the third year in a row that Dutch had more to spend. But the growth is small compared to the 3.2 percent growth in the Netherlands gross domestic product.

The number of registered crimes in the Netherlands decreased again last year and is now back at the level of 1980, Statistics Netherlands reported on Monday. Crime in the Netherlands increased steadily at the start of this century, but decreased considerably over the past few years. Last year 49 crimes were registered per 1,000 inhabitants, compared to 93 per 1,000 inhabitants in 2001 and 2002, NOS reports.

Nearly a third of Polish migrant workers that came to the Netherlands in 2011, were still in the country five years later. There are slightly more women than men, and the majority are not registered with a Dutch municipality, Statistics Netherlands reported on Friday.

The percentage of Dutch 15 year olds not living with both their parents increased from 20 percent to 30 percent between 1997 and 2017. Children of unmarried parents are more likely to see their parents separate than kids of married parents, Statistics Netherlands said in its report New Families, released on Monday.

The reason for the vast majority of 15 year olds not living with both parents, is divorce or separation. Less than 5 percent of these teenagers don't live with both parents due to the death of one or both parents.

The number of kids in the Netherlands receiving treatment or aid from youth care increased significantly over the past two years. In 2015, when Dutch municipalities took over the responsibility of youth care, there were 349 thousand kids in youth care, last year there were 392,500, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands, RTL Nieuws reports.

Between the years 2000 and 2016, companies in the Netherlands' production methods have become cleaner and they used relatively less raw materials. Companies that are involved in environmental protection and natural resources are also doing well - their production and employment opportunities increased, Statistics Netherlands reported in its Green Growth report on Monday.

For the first time more cyclists than motorists died in traffic accidents in the Netherlands in 2017, Statistics Netherlands reported on Wednesday. A total of 206 cyclists and 201 motorists were killed in accidents last year.

The number of cyclists killed in accidents increased from 189 in 2016. The total number of people killed in traffic accidents decreased slightly, 613 in 2017 compared to 629 in 2016.

Almost all regions in the Netherlands saw economic growth last year. The Groningen region was the only one to see its economy shrink. The regions around Eindhoven and Almere saw the strongest growth, Statistics Netherlands reported on Tuesday. 

In both the Eindhoven and Almere regions, the economy grew by 4.9 percent last year compared to 2016. In Zuidoost-Noord-Brabant - Eindhoven and its surroundings - last year's economic growth was mainly supported by industry and business services. In Almere, lease companies in particular contributed to the economic growth.

In March 3.9 percent of the Netherlands' labor force were unemployed, compared to 4.1 percent in February. That is still above the unemployment level before the financial crisis in 2008, but the percentage halved since early in 2014, when unemployment peaked at 7.8 percent, Statistics Netherlands reported on Thursday.

Last month more than 8.7 million people between the ages of 15 and 75 years had paid work. That number increased by an average of 20 thousand per month over the past three months.

Only 11 percent of the 20 thousand asylum seekers who got refugee status in the Netherlands in 2014, had paid work in the summer of last year. A year and a half after obtaining refugee status, on 4 percent had paid work, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Tuesday.

Half of the refugees that came to the Netherlands in 2014 are from Syria. 10 percent of this group had paid work last summer - Statistics Netherlands' latest reference date. 6 percent of the 4 thousand Eritrean refugees had work. Most of the refugees in these two groups are still on welfare.

Last year 4 percent of Dutch young people between the ages of 15 and 25 were not working or studying - the lowest percentage of all European Union Member States, Statistics Netherlands reported on Monday.

The European average for young people that are unemployed and not studying was 12 percent in 2016. No EU figures for 2017 are available yet. According to the stats office, the percentage of unemployed young people who are also not studying in the Netherlands has been around 5 percent for years. The EU average was also pretty much stable over the past years.

The number of tourists that stayed in accommodation in the Netherlands last year increased by nearly 9 percent to 42 million. That is the strongest growth since 2006, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Wednesday.

Statistics Netherlands' figures do not include overnight stays in accommodations with fewer than five rooms, which means that most tourists booking accommodation through online platforms like Airbnb are not included in these figures.
