Netherlands, NATO allies weigh response to Trump Strait of Hormuz blockade plan
The Netherlands is examining what role it could play alongside NATO allies as tensions escalate over the Strait of Hormuz, while saying it would only consider involvement if the wider military escalation in the region comes to a halt, according to NU.nl.
The remarks come as the United States moves ahead with plans announced by President Donald Trump to block and assert control over the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important shipping routes between Iran and Oman.
Trump said the operation would involve stopping and inspecting vessels in the waterway and warned that ships linked to payments to Iran could face restrictions even in international waters. He also said other countries would be involved in supporting the effort, though he did not name them.
The developments come amid a broader escalation following failed negotiations in Pakistan between U.S. and Iranian officials, including Vice President JD Vance. Those talks collapsed over Iran’s nuclear program, with Trump accusing Tehran of undermining the process by refusing to abandon its nuclear ambitions.
