Europe can defend itself: Jetten on U.S. threat to withdraw troops from EU over Greenland
Rob Jetten does not seem impressed by Donald Trump’s threat that he can withdraw all American troops from Europe if the EU does not cooperate with his ambitions to control Greenland. “We have shown in recent months that we are well capable of defending this continent ourselves,” the Dutch Prime Minister responded at the NATO summit in Ankara. “But of course, with the help of the Americans,” he added.
The Prime Minister reiterated his message that Europe has been contributing much more to NATO in recent years. “We have tripled our defense spending. Other countries have also increased it significantly. And in recent days, we have seen many deals regarding military cooperation between European allies.”
Trump regularly flirts with the idea of leaving NATO. According to Jetten, the military alliance actually has a lot to offer, especially now that European countries are increasing their contributions. “We have many capabilities that are also crucial for the United States. And companies from America and Europe are working more closely together to boost the defense industry. So it is in the interest of the United States to be part of this strengthened NATO alliance.”
Jetten also commented on the recent Iranian attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz. He said he understands that the United States responded with airstrikes. “We naturally have a fragile ceasefire in the Middle East, with occasional shelling back and forth. It is also important to show that you do not accept that this ceasefire is being violated,” the Dutch Prime Minister said.
However, he also considers it important “to apply all diplomatic pressure to resume the talks, so that a lasting solution to this war can be found.” Jetten has “confidence that we can reach a final agreement.”
NATO Chief Mark Rutte went a step further by calling the American attacks necessary. “It is of crucial importance that the U.S. respond forcefully,” said Jetten’s predecessor on the sidelines of the same summit meeting.
