PSV parade caps off title triumph with citywide celebrations
Thousands of people celebrated PSV’s Eredivisie title victory with the team in the city center of Eindhoven on Tuesday. The team celebrated its 27th title, which was won on Sunday, on the Stadhuisplein in front of around 20,000 people. The players and staff were welcomed earlier in the afternoon at the Philips Stadion, where they received the championship trophy, before touring the city on a flatbed cart.
By early afternoon, crowds had already gathered at Stadhuisplein. When the area filled up, the municipality asked the remaining supporters to move to the Septemberplein, Catharinaplein, Stationsplein, and Oude Stadsgracht. The stage program included a performance by Guus Meeuwis.
Fans were also able to watch the celebration on big screens at other city spots, including the Markt. In total, the municipality of Eindhoven stated that around 100,000 people were expected in the city to celebrate the championship.
Some fans were able to circumvent the checkpoints and force their way onto the Stadhuisplein. Others forced their way through the gate by pushing it open, which led to a dangerous situation for some, with first aid responders called.
Police seized fireworks at Stadhuisplein, a spokesperson confirmed to Omroep Brabant. Lighting fireworks is strictly forbidden. Fans were also prohibited from bringing bags into the fenced areas at the square and the Markt, and the municipality has banned alcohol, drugs, glass, cans, and weapons.
PSV’s players and staff were greeted with thunderous cheers at the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven. On stage, the team and coach Peter Bosz proudly received the championship trophy.
Captain Jerdy Schouten was the last to enter the field, walking on crutches after sustaining a cruciate ligament injury during Saturday’s match against FC Utrecht. This injury means the PSV defender will miss the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The stadium crowd was ecstatic, with fans singing “boeren, boeren,” the Dutch word for farmers, and raising cardboard replicas of the championship trophy. Many children were present among the supporters. Although the municipality has banned fireworks, a few red flares were ignited inside the stadium.
A giant poem honoring the championship adorns the façade of the Philips Stadion. PSV are the earliest champions in Eredivisie history. They won the title on Sunday after second-place Feyenoord failed to defeat FC Volendam away. It is their championship in a row under Bosz.
