PSV now 10 points ahead of Feyenoord after dominant 3-0 win

PSV may have knocked Feyenoord out of title contention on Sunday. The Eindhovenaren were much too good for their opponents in the Philips Stadium and won 3-0. Feyenoord now has 10 points less than the league leaders at the halfway stage of the season.

For Brian Priske’s team, it was only the second Eredivisie loss of the season. Feyenoord is in fourth place going into the winter break and also has a four-point gap on arch-rivals Ajax.

The quality difference between both teams was significant in the first half. PSV, who wanted to bounce back from their surprising 1-0 loss last week against SC Heerenveen, were the better team from the first whistle, and this did not change throughout the match.

Malik Tillman tested Justin Bijlow, who was chosen instead of Timon Wellenreuther, in the fifth minute. Feyenoord survived the opening phase of the match but conceded anyway after the first 15 minutes.

The attack started with Luuk de Jong, who won an aerial duel against Gernot Trauner and sent Ivan Perisic through with a pass. Noa Lang ran to the first post and beat Bart Nieuwkoop to the ball to make it 1-0.

De Jong doubled the lead in the 27th minute with a header. Again, the assist came from Perisic. This was De Jong’s 24th goal in the Eredivisie in 2024, which equals his record from 2015.

Feyenoord did not register a shot on target in the first half and also did not touch the ball once in PSV’s penalty area. And yet it was almost 2-1 right before halftime. A header from Ramiz Zerrouki was knocked against the post by Santiago Gimenez using his knees.

The visitors were more dangerous in the first 15 minutes after halftime. Gimenez should have profited from a mistake by Ryan Flamingo to bring Feyenoord back into the game after an hour. The Mexican striker hit the crossbar on this occasion.

This came just two minutes before PSV made it 3-0. Tillman hit the ball into the far corner from outside the area.

PSV manager Peter Bosz gave Hirving Lozano a cameo before the end of the match. This was a way for the attacker to say goodbye to the PSV crowd. Lozano will be playing for San Diego FC in the United States in 2025.
