PSV continue Eredivisie dominance with 6-1 win over FC Twente
PSV are still untouchable at the top of the Eredivisie for now. Peter Bosz’s side were way too good for FC Twente at home (6-1) on Friday. Twente was fifth in the table and had only conceded 14 goals in the Eredivisie this season before this game.
It was PSV’s 14th win in 15 matches. The team also scored five goals last weekend against third-place FC Utrecht. The only match they lost this season was against Ajax last month (3-2).
The team can now put all their focus on the Champions League match against Stade Brest next Tuesday. They now have a nine-point lead over second-place Ajax in the Eredivisie, who play against AZ on Sunday.
FC Twente was not hiding in the Philips stadium. PSV’s left back Matteo Dams stopped Mees Hilgers from breaking the deadlock with a slide tackle.
However, Twente was celebrating after ten minutes played. Referee Sander van Eijck awarded a free kick because he incorrectly thought Michal Sadilek had been floored, and Sem Steijn scored beautifully from the free kick (0-1). Sadilek was not given a penalty when he was taken down by Johan Bakayoko a short while later.
FC Twente was not able to enjoy the lead for long. PSV’s first goal came when Noa Lang surprised Twente goalkeeper Przemyslaw Tyton, who is replacing the injured Lars Unnerstal.
Malik Tillman gave PSV the lead in the 34th minute. He was playing in his favorite position, just behind the striker. Ricardo Pepi was chosen over Luuk de Jong, who, like the recovered Jerdy Schouten, did not come on as a substitute. PSV has such a deep squad that Joey Veerman, Ivan Perisic, Hirving Lozano, and Guus Til were brought off the bench after the break.
Ismael Saibari scored the home team’s third goal of the first half in injury time and scored again just after halftime to make it 4-1. Richard Ledezma made it 5-1, and Pepi scored PSV’s 111th league goal of 2024. This is the most that the Eindhoven club has ever scored in the league in a calendar year.
