PSV beat Sparta Rotterdam 3-1 to win the club's 26th Eredivisie title

PSV beat Sparta Rotterdam 3-1 to win their 26th Eredivisie title on Sunday. The Eindhovenaren closed a gap of nine points on Ajax during the season and finished it with a point more than their title rivals. Ivan Perisic, Luuk de Jong, and Malik Tillman scored the goals for Peter Bosz’s side.

Ajax also won their last game of the season against FC Twente, but it was not enough for Francesco Farioli’s team to secure the championship. Jordan Henderson and Wout Weghorst got the goals in Amsterdam.

Both teams scored their first goals within two minutes. Ajax struck first when Jordan Henderson headed a free kick from Youri Regeer into the goal. But the Ajax fans were not able to enjoy this very long as PSV broke the deadlock less than a minute later. A cross from Oliver Boscagli was headed into the goal by Ivan Perisic.

Both teams were in control and dominating, with Sparta’s goalkeeper, Nick Olij, putting in a fantastic performance to keep PSV from scoring several goals, while Ajax controlled the game against FC Twente too.

PSV were awarded a penalty initially in the 48th minute. Referee Serdar Guzubuyuk awarded the penalty for what he thought was a foul on Malik Tillman, but he reversed his decision after a VAR review.

Sparta equalized against the run of play in the 52nd minute. A pass from Mohamed Nassoh found, of all people, Sparta’s loan player from Ajax’s arch-rivals Feyenoord, Gijval Zechiel, who placed the ball into the far corner.

This led to an eruption of noise in the Johan Cruijff ArenA in Amsterdam as the title was going to Ajax in this scenario. However, again, the celebrations did not last long. First, a goal from Wout Weghorst was ruled out after a VAR review, and then, while they were waiting, the news that PSV had re-taken the lead came through.

The goal came when PSV took advantage of a Sparta defender lying down injured in the box by crossing the ball to Luuk de Jong, who kept his composure and calmly slotted home to put PSV back in first place.

Peter Bosz’s side sealed their title in the 84th minute. A cross from Noa Lang was headed the wrong way by Guus Til, but it worked out perfectly as the ball went straight to Tillman, who smashed it into the net.

While PSV were enjoying the party in Rotterdam, the Ajax players were getting cheered by their supporters in Amsterdam. There were tears from some players and staff like Kian Fitz Jim and the team's manager Francesco Farioli, while Weghorst, who had scored late on for Ajax to make it 2-0, showed his anger by hitting a TV camera that had been focused on him.
