PSV stunned at home by newly promoted Telstar; Feyenoord take over top spot

PSV suffered a shock loss at home to newly promoted side Telstar on Saturday. The reigning champions were defeated 0-2 by the club from IJmuiden. Feyenoord ended up taking advantage of the loss, taking top spot in the Eredivisie after a 0-4 win away to Sparta Rotterdam.

Many PSV supporters were expecting a straightforward win against Telstar, who had not won any of their first three games in the Eredivisie prior to the game. But the crowd was silenced in the 21st minute when Tyrone Owusu hit a magnificent curled effort into the far corner to put the visitors ahead.

Telstar got their second goal of the game in the 65th minute. A corner was headed on before it was hooked into the goal by Patrick Brouwer. Telstar’s manager, Anthony Correia, remained incredibly calm after the game. “Of course, you have to respect an opponent, but you shouldn’t make them bigger than they are. PSV is just another opponent. Each time, you have to look at how you can beat a team. We were just playing a normal game of football.”

PSV manager Peter Bosz was impressed with Correia’s side. “‘I have a lot of admiration for that. They did very well and fully deserved to win. We were outplayed in every area. In pressing, but also in the footballing side of things, they were better.’”

It was only the third time that Telstar had ever beaten a traditional top 3 side (Ajax, Feyenoord, or PSV), with the other two victories coming in 1964 and 1968.

The defeat meant that PSV dropped from first place in the Eredivisie to fourth. Feyenoord took over the top spot with a comfortable win in the Rotterdam derby against Sparta Rotterdam.

A fantastic volley from Jordan Bos got Robin van Persie’s side on the scoresheet before two goals from Ayase Ueda and an injury-time goal from Quinten Timber closed off the scoring. Sparta played most of the second half with 10 men after Bruno Martins Indi was sent off.

Feyenoord also went over NEC with the win. The club from Nijmegen conceded an injury-time winner away to Fortuna Sittard to put an end to their perfect start to the season. It is the first time that Feyenoord have won their first three games of an Eredivisie season since 2017-18.

Mohamed Ihattaren scored twice for Fortuna, with Bryan Linssen and a lovely finish from Sami Ouaissa scoring for NEC. The 3-2 was scored in the 93rd minute by Sittard striker Paul Gladon.

It was a difficult weekend for FC Twente. Joseph Oosting’s side picked up their first win of the season last weekend away to SC Heerenveen, but their good work was undone with a poor loss to Excelsior.

The loss, which came as a result of an 83rd-minute goal from Mike van Duinen, was made worse by the fact that Excelsior had played most of the match with a man less due to a red card for Stan Henderikx.

The pressure is currently mounting on Twente’s manager Joseph Oosting, with the Tukkers in 14th place after four games played.

There will be no Eredivisie matches next weekend due to the international break.
