Amsterdam tunnel closure will add 60 minutes to rush hour commutes for 18 months
Commuters in Amsterdam should prepare for major delays as the IJtunnel will close for at least a year and a half starting in summer 2027 for extensive maintenance, AT5 reports.
Officials warn that rush-hour travel could take up to an extra hour. The closure will address the tunnel’s asphalt, surveillance and security systems, ventilation, and lighting.
The city has launched an online survey asking drivers about their travel habits, vehicle types, trip purposes, and usual journey times. The survey also highlights expected delays: "If the IJtunnel is closed, diversion routes will become very busy. During peak hours, expect at least 20 to 60 minutes of additional travel time. Outside peak hours, expect 10 to 30 minutes of extra travel time."
Officials are seeking input on alternative travel options such as the ferry or the Noord/Zuidlijn metro, or adjusting travel times. Respondents can note obstacles, including long travel times by other means or the need to transport tools or goods. "Are there things that prevent you from traveling other than by car?" the survey asks.
City authorities said the results will help plan the closure and improve travel options. "This allows us to better meet the needs of travelers and develop viable travel options," the municipality said. "It also ensures that roads in and around Amsterdam remain as accessible as possible and that space remains for people who have no alternative to traveling by car."
