One wounded in shooting at crowded Arnhem mall; Suspect arrested
A shooting inside a crowded shopping mall in Arnhem injured one person Saturday afternoon, and police later fired a warning shot while arresting a suspect outside the complex, authorities said.
According to Omroep Gelderland, the shooting occurred just after 3 p.m. inside the overdekte winkelcentrum Kronenburg shopping center, where many shoppers were present at the time.
The victim was shot near the toy store Intertoys and was taken by ambulance to a hospital. A police spokesperson said the injuries were not serious. Omroep Gelderland's 112 reporter said the person was shot in the foot.
After the shooting, the suspect fled but was apprehended just outside the shopping center. During the arrest, police fired a warning shot, according to the 112 reporter.
Outside the mall, officers also found a knife, which was seized by police. Reports about the knife have not been confirmed. Police cordoned off a large area of the shopping center to conduct an investigation.
A witness inside the mall said there was no panic among shoppers after the incident. The witness initially did not realize the loud bang was a gunshot. “You don’t expect something like that. I heard from other people that there had been a shooting," the witness told Omroep Gelderland. “I was completely distraught.”
