Invisible ice makes roads risky in Northern Netherlands; Code yellow until noon
A yellow warning for ice is in effect Saturday morning in Friesland, Drenthe, Groningen, and the Wadden Islands, with a high risk of accidents on roads, bike paths, sidewalks, and bridges, weeronline reports. The alert remains until 12:00 p.m.
Overnight temperatures in the northern provinces dropped below freezing. The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) reported that sleet, snow remnants, and refreezing of wet surfaces cause icy conditions.
“In the northeast, local roads are slippery due to snow remnants and freezing wet areas. There is especially a chance of ice Saturday morning,” the KNMI said. “This slipperiness can be treacherous because ice is difficult to see. Rain falling on frozen surfaces makes the ground even more slippery.”
A larger precipitation system moved across the country Saturday morning. Most regions received rain over surfaces slightly above freezing, but the Northeast saw rain falling on roads below zero, creating locally treacherous conditions. Roads there are expected to thaw by late morning, though temperatures showed stark contrasts: 1 degree Celsius in Groningen compared with 6 to 7 degrees in southern provinces.
Saturday afternoon will bring mostly dry conditions across the country, though clouds will remain widespread. Temperatures will range from 1 degree in the north to around 5 degrees in central regions and up to 9 degrees in the extreme south. Winds will be light to moderate from the southeast.
On Saturday night and Sunday morning, clouds will persist, with isolated showers possible. Ice is again likely in the Northeast, while rain continues elsewhere. Overnight lows will drop from −2 degrees in Groningen to about 4 degrees in Noord-Brabant and Limburg.
Sunday, limited ice risk remains in the northeast, mainly in parts of Groningen. Temperature contrasts persist, with Groningen approaching freezing while the south reaches above 9 degrees.
Monday is expected to intensify the temperature gap. The northeast will remain below freezing all day, with parts of extreme northeastern Groningen not exceeding −3 degrees. Central areas will reach about 6 degrees, and the south may approach double digits. Scattered showers are possible nationwide, with ice again a concern in the Northeast.
On Tuesday, a southern precipitation system may bring snow or ice to the northeastern Netherlands as temperatures hover around freezing, while the rest of the country experiences rain with highs between 2 and 8 degrees. Conditions will become drier from the south later in the day, though isolated showers may persist.
