Freezing temperatures, snow to grip Netherlands through weekend

The country will face continued wintry weather for the rest of the week, with snow, icy conditions, and sharply cold temperatures affecting most regions, meteorologists report.

Evening conditions on Wednesday will see snow persisting in the east. In central areas, temperatures will rise slightly to 1 or 2 degrees, while the west sees 3 to 4 degrees with rain in some areas. Snow showers will continue inland, and along the coast, winds from the southwest to west will pick up and become fairly strong.

Overnight, cloud cover will dominate, with occasional precipitation. Eastern regions will see wet snow near or slightly above freezing, creating slick conditions. Western areas will reportedly experience 1 to 3 degrees with rain, while leftover snow could also create icy patches. If skies clear locally, temperatures may briefly drop below freezing.

Thursday will likely begin mostly dry with clouds and occasional sunshine, though localized icy patches are possible due to leftover snow and refreezing, particularly in the east. Temperatures inland will hover around one degree, while near the coast, southerly wind will keep conditions slightly milder at 2 to 5 degrees.

Later in the afternoon, rain will develop in the south and spread northeast in the evening. Snow is expected in the north, east, and around the IJsselmeer and Veluwe, with temperatures dropping near freezing. Overnight, precipitation will taper, with rain remaining in the south and temperatures rising slightly to 4 or 5 degrees.

Friday will be a cloudy day with periods of precipitation. Rain will dominate the south in the morning, with temperatures around 4 degrees, while a mix of rain and snow will occur in the northeast at around 1 degree. Winds will shift direction across regions, and temperatures will gradually fall, increasing the chance of snow. Overnight, some areas may experience freezing conditions.

Saturday will bring continued winter weather. Snow showers will fall throughout the day, especially in the northeast and east, where temperatures are expected to remain below freezing, creating ice. In the south and west, highs will reach around 1 degree. Winds will blow from the north to northeast at moderate strength. By evening, conditions are forecast to dry, but overnight temperatures are expected to drop below minus 5 degrees, with some areas reaching as low as minus 9 or minus 10 degrees.

Sunday will remain frigid. Morning frost is expected to range from minus 6 to minus 9 degrees across much of the country. Skies will be partly cloudy with occasional sunshine. Inland temperatures may briefly rise above freezing, but most areas are forecast to remain below zero all day. By evening, temperatures will drop sharply again.

Looking ahead, Monday will continue cold with frost, particularly in the northeast, where temperatures remain below zero all day. Southern areas may rise just above freezing. Snowfall is possible amid mostly cloudy skies. Temperatures may gradually increase over the next few days.
