Snow to continue disrupting train services across the Netherlands on Monday
Travelers should expect snow and winter weather to continue disrupting train services across the Netherlands, with further delays expected on Monday. The Dutch national railway, NS, updated its advisory at 1:50 p.m. Sunday following multiple disruptions over the weekend.
"Due to freezing, switches can become stuck, causing problems for train traffic," an NS spokesperson said. "At this moment, it is not possible to predict exactly where delays will occur." Travelers are advised to plan trips shortly before departure and monitor the NS travel planner.
Sunday is seeing reduced or suspended service on several lines. Intercity trains between Eindhoven and Heerlen ran on a limited schedule, while high-speed services between Rotterdam and Breda were affected by a switch malfunction. Sprinter trains were canceled on the Tilburg Universiteit–Eindhoven, Zwolle–Leeuwarden, and Breda–’s-Hertogenbosch lines.
Switch malfunctions also affected Leeuwarden–Stavoren and Schiphol–Utrecht, although the latter returned to normal service around 3:15 p.m. Ongoing maintenance on Groningen–Leer and Arnhem–Duisburg/Düsseldorf added further travel disruptions.
The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) says snow showers are expected in inland areas on Monday, while coastal regions will see a mix of rain and wet snow, with occasional sunshine.
Temperatures will rise slightly above freezing, around 1 degree inland and 4 degrees along the west coast. Winds from the west will be moderate to strong near the coast, making it feel colder. Overnight temperatures may drop to between -2 and -5 degrees inland, creating a risk of icy roads.
NS warned that the combination of snow, freezing, and ongoing maintenance will continue to affect train travel across multiple regions. "Plan your journey shortly in advance and take into account delays," the spokesperson said.
