Explosions reported during Nunhems seed facility fire in Limburg
A large fire broke out Friday evening at seed company Nunhems in Nunhem, and multiple explosions were reported, according to the Veiligheidsregio Limburg-Noord. The Napoleonsweg was temporarily closed, and the surrounding area was cordoned off.
According to De Limburger, the first reports of the fire came in around 9 p.m., prompting a rapid emergency response. Several fire trucks arrived at the scene, and authorities quickly escalated the incident to a major fire alert.
An hour after the fire started, authorities confirmed the involvement of a warehouse containing agricultural vehicles. The explosions appeared to come from this warehouse. “That could be related to possibly exploding tanks,” a spokesperson said. The firefighters' quick response prevented the diesel stored in the warehouse from igniting.
Nearby resident Toos Caris, who retired two years ago after 37 years at Nunhems, witnessed the fire. “We heard many bangs—probably tractor tires exploding,” she told De Limburger. “There was a lot of fire, but the firefighters arrived incredibly fast. It’s unbelievable how many trucks showed up so quickly. The fire was put out fairly soon.”
Residents were not allowed on the premises, and people in Nunhem were advised to close windows and doors as smoke moved toward Buggenum.
The fire was declared under control around 10:15 p.m., and the Napoleonsweg and surrounding areas were reopened. “In the end, it wasn’t as awful as it first seemed,” the spokesperson said. The fire did not spread to nearby warehouses, and the smoke did not cause significant local disruption.
No injuries were reported. According to Caris and a current employee, only security personnel were present on the site after 6 p.m. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
