The Royal Palace on Dam Square in Amsterdam was defaced with red paint and the words “fuck Israel” during the early hours of Tuesday morning. The police are investigating.
The vandalism was reported to the police at around 5:30 a.m., according to AT5. Photos show red paint thrown on the palace stairs, smeared on the walls, and thrown towards the balcony.
The activist group Palestine Action NL claimed responsibility for the action on Instagram, saying that the action was prompted by Mayor Femke Halsema banning a commemoration of Palestine, but allowing an Israeli commemoration on Dam Square today.
The activist group targeted the Royal Palace because it symbolises “the centuries long history of Dutch colonialism. The actionists used red paint, resembling the blood that the Dutch state has on its hands,” Palestine Action NL wrote.
Two years ago today, the terrorist organization Hamas committed attacks on Israel, killing 1,137 people. Israel responded with large-scale bombings and hasn’t stopped since, barring a brief ceasefire early this year, which Israel broke in March.
In the past two years, Israel has killed 67,160 people in the Gaza Strip, including at least 19,424 children. At least 169,679 people are injured, Al Jazeera reported based on figures from the Palestinian Ministry of Health, updated on October 6.
In addition to the continued attacks, Israel has also blocked aid from entering the Palestinian territory in any significant amounts for months. At least 459 people have starved to death in the Gaza Strip. 154 of them were children and babies.
