Man, 20, suspected of manslaughter after fatal assault in Utrecht; 57 y.o. man killed

A 20-year-old man arrested for involvement in a fatal assault in Utrecht this weekend is suspected of manslaughter, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) said in his arraignment on Tuesday. He is suspected of killing a 57-year-old man. The suspect was remanded into custody for 14 days.

The incident happened on Burgjeslaan on Friday night, RTV Utrecht reported. A woman who happened to be in the area found the 57-year-old man unconscious on the corner of Kershoflaan at around 00:30 a.m. on Saturday. When he was unresponsive, she called the emergency services and began resuscitation. Paramedics took over from her and rushed the man to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries a day later.

Investigation led the police to the 20-year-old man. He was arrested in Utrecht at around 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The police are investigating what happened and have asked locals to submit any relevant camera footage they have.

Angelique van Vliegen was the woman who found the unconscious man and tried to resuscitate him. “I feel so sorry for his family and friends,” she told RTV Utrecht. She had been visiting someone in the neighborhood and was heading home when she found the man. “I’d never resuscitated anyone before, so it was intense. I’m still shaking. I wouldn’t want to go through that again.”

Locals told the broadcaster that neither the victim nor the suspect lived on Burgjeslaan. The victim reportedly lived elsewhere in the neighborhood. According to one local, the 57-year-old man had gone out for a beer that night and was beaten up on his way home.

The locals said that Brugjeslaan is a quiet street. “Nothing ever happens here, so I find this quite shocking,” one said. Another added: “Of course, we don’t know what happened. But whatever preceded it, this is terrible.”
