Another hot day ahead for the Netherlands; Some showers, but little relief, tonight

The Netherlands is in for another tropical day, with temperatures ranging from 30 to 35 degrees Celsius. Some showers are expected tonight, but they will bring little relief. The cloud cover means that the night won’t cool down below 20 degrees, especially in the cities, according to Weeronline.

Wednesday will be dry and sunny and very warm. Thermometers will hit 25 degrees by mid-morning and 30 degrees by noon in many places. Maximums will climb to 35 degrees along the eastern border. Eindhoven and Gilze-Rijen will very likely record a regional heatwave today, the second of the year. The beaches will also have glorious summer weather, with maximums between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius.

Cloud cover will gradually increase from the south in the late afternoon, turning into a few showers overnight into Thursday. A local thunderstorm is possible, but the showers won’t be particularly intense. “Due to the cloud cover, temperatures will hardly drop,” Weeronline said. Residents of the larger cities, in particular, can expect a hot and sticky night.

Thursday morning will be quite cloudy, with an isolated shower or thunderstorm. But most places will remain dry, and the sun will shine abundantly everywhere by the afternoon. It will be another hot day, Weeronline expects. “There is still some uncertainty in the temperature forecast, but there is a good chance of tropical temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius.” Especially inland. Several weather stations will record a regional heatwave tomorrow. The national weather station in De Bilt could also hit 30, which would make the second official heatwave of the year a fact.

For a regional heatwave, a weather station needs to record five consecutive days with maximums above 25 degrees, including three with maximums above 30. For an official heatwave, that needs to happen at the national weather station in De Bilt.

The summer weather will continue into the weekend, though it will be noticeably less warm due to a northerly wind bringing somewhat cooler air. Friday could still hit 30 degrees inland, but maximums over the weekend will range between 22 and 27 degrees. No rain is expected from Friday onwards, and sunshine and cloud cover will alternate regularly.

Swimmers beware

Swimmers should take note that the water quality is not great this year, according to an ANP analysis of RIVM figures. This year, 280 swimming locations received at least one safety warning, a near-doubling compared to last year’s 142. Currently, there are health risks due to water quality at 158 swimming locations, approximately 17 percent of the total of nearly 800 swimming spots in the Nehterlands.
