Video: Car crashes into Tiel home, hitting gas meter; Residential block evacuated
A car crashed into a home in a residential block on Flipje’s Erf in Tiel, Gelderland, on Monday and hit the gas meter. The entire block had to be evacuated as a precaution, the office for the local emergency services, Veiligheidsregio Gelderland-Zuid, reported.
According to Omroep Gelderland, the car drove into a courtyard near the building at high speed at around 6:30 p.m. It crossed a bicycle path and a playground and crashed into the home’s facade.
It is unclear how the accident happened. The Veiligheidsregio also didn’t say anything about the driver’s condition. An ambulance responded to the scene to assist.
Because the car hit the gas meter, all 11 homes in the residential block were evacuated as a precaution. Grid operator Liander came to shut off the main gas line, and a contractor came to stabilize the damaged home.
The car was removed from the building late in the evening. Some residents were able to return home after the fire department ventilated the residential block. Temporary shelter was arranged at a community center for residents who were unable to go home.
