Dutch travelers urged to prepare for black Saturday traffic, wildfires in South Europe
The Red Cross has issued tips for Dutch citizens who are on vacation in southern Europe and Turkey, where extreme heat and wildfires are affecting multiple areas. Dutch holiday goers have also been warned to prepare for heavy traffic this weekend throughout Europe.
The aid organization recommends that people save the local emergency numbers for the fire department and the ambulance in their phone. They also stated that it is a good idea to learn which local news channel gives information about possible wildfires.
In case of a wildfire, the Red Cross advises travelers to have a bag ready with the necessary documents and valuable items in it. Make sure your car has enough fuel and wear sturdy shoes in case you need to evacuate, the advice continues. A damp towel can protect your head from heat and smoke during a fire and can also be used to shield your feet if you have to run through an area affected by flames.
Anyone who is too late to evacuate and gets caught in a fire is advised to head as quickly as possible to an open area, such as a road.
So far, neither the ANWB nor the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has received any requests for assistance from Dutch nationals affected by the extreme heat. According to an ANWB spokesperson, the emergency center has received a few calls from people seeking information or advice.
Meanwhile, the ANWB expects exceptionally heavy traffic on European roads this Saturday. Departing and returning holidaymakers will cause overcrowded routes to and from popular European destinations, the traffic information service warns. In France, August 2 is considered a black Saturday this year, as many residents of the Paris region begin their holidays and leave the city that day.
Between August 4 and 10, drivers should also be prepared for increased traffic enforcement across Europe. Several European countries will be conducting so-called speed trap marathons during that period.
