Motorcyclist killed in crash near Poortvliet; driver arrested over alcohol use
A 21-year-old motorcyclist from Tholen was killed Friday night in a collision with a car on the N286 between Poortvliet and Tholen in Zeeland. Police reported that the driver of the vehicle, a 35-year-old man from Scherpenisse, has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and remains in custody as the investigation continues.
The Operational Center received the first report of the serious crash on Friday at 9 p.m. Emergency services responded quickly to the scene, where they found the motorcyclist critically injured. Despite efforts by first responders, the man died at the scene from his injuries.
According to police, the car driver was taken to the station immediately after the collision because officers suspected he had been drinking. Tests later confirmed that he had indeed consumed too much alcohol.
Initial findings indicate the possibility that the suspect was speeding and entered the curve where the crash occurred too narrowly, causing his vehicle to cross into the opposite lane. Investigators said there is no indication at this stage that the deceased motorcyclist had exceeded the speed limit.
The N286 was closed in both directions for several hours Friday night while police carried out an extensive investigation into the circumstances of the collision. Authorities said the inquiry is still ongoing and will likely take more time to complete.
Because of the serious suspicion of dangerous driving and the unresolved details of the crash, the suspect will remain in custody while further evidence is gathered.
