PSV complete signing of Ruben van Bommel from AZ Alkmaar

PSV has confirmed the signing of Ruben van Bommel from AZ Alkmaar. The 20-year-old attacker has signed a contract until 2030 with the champions, PSV announced on Friday. Van Bommel, who is the son of former PSV legend and manager Mark van Bommel, will go with the Eindhoven club to their training camp in Germany on Monday. The U-21 Oranje international had a contract running until 2027 at AZ.

According to Rik Elfrink, the PSV watcher for the Eindhovens Dagblad, the signing is not a record fee for the club. Meaning that it is below 15 million euros.

“This is a day that I have been looking forward to, and one I will never forget. I cannot wait to get started,” Van Bommel said on PSV’s official channels. The club has said that they are confident in Van Bommel being able to make an impact in Eindhoven. “Of course, I want to prove them right. There will always be pressure; I have had that my whole life, and I am used to it at this point. I am very driven to develop myself further here and to win trophies,” the attacker said.

Van Bommel played in PSV’s youth system for seven years before joining MVV. He has played for AZ since 2023. His father played for PSV between 1999 and 2005, and returned for one year in 2012. He became the manager of PSV in 2018, but he left the club after being sacked in December 2019.

“To play for PSV’s first team is something that I have always dreamed of,” Van Bommel added. “I always had it in my head that if PSV were to come in for me, I would love to go there.”

PSV’s director of football, Earnest Stewart, is pleased with the completion of the transfer. “Ruben has been at the top of the list to improve our attack for a while. He’s a unique athlete, with a great shot, a lot of depth in his game, and a dangerously strong dribble. At the same time, he has the right mindset and is only 20 years old, which means there’s still plenty of room for growth,” said Stewart.

It may not be the only AZ player that PSV signs from the club this summer. Elfrink reported on X that Sven Mijnans is also pushing for a move to the reigning Eredivisie champions.

PSV will likely have a busy summer. Malik Tillman’s transfer to Bayer Leverkusen is in the final stages, with reports also linking Noa Lang to a transfer to Napoli. In addition, no decision has been made by the club’s former captain, Luuk de Jong, regarding his future, and Johan Bakayoko is being linked with a move to the English Premier League.
