PSV still have 100 percent win record in the Eredivisie after beating AZ Alkmaar

PSV’s domination of the Eredivisie continued on Saturday night as they won their first match against one of the top sides with little trouble as AZ was defeated 1-2. The match had a short period where it was even at the start, but AZ got a man sent off after 11 minutes played due to a direct red card for David Møller Wolfe who fouled Guus Til when he was one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

The match in Alkmaar was quite similar to this fixture last season. PSV scored three times in the first 15 minutes of the match in December, which led to a comfortable victory. The Eindhovenaren won that match 4-0 in the end.

AZ wanted to prevent a repeat of that, but they had to change their game plan early in the match. Referee Allard Lindhout doubted whether to give the foul for a second but blew the whistle in the end and then sent Møller Wolfe off.

PSV opened the score before AZ Maarten Martens had made any changes. Rick Karsdorp crossed the ball high to the second post, which Guus Til then headed back across goal to Luuk de Jong, whose shot went into the goal via AZ midfielder Sven Mijnans. It was De Jong’s 14th goal against AZ in the Eredivisie.

Mijnans was substituted after the goal and replaced by defender Denso Kasius. PSV doubled their lead in the 22nd minute. Once again, Til played a significant role in the goal. Goalkeeper Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro pushed a cross from the midfielder to the side, which Noa Lang pounced on to score. It was the first league goal since September 2023 for Lang, who has been plagued by injuries.

PSV were able to take their foot off the gas after their quick, comfortable lead against the ten-man AZ. A disappointment was Jerdy Schouten, who went off with an injury shortly before halftime. The midfielder has had troubles with his knee in the past, and he seemed to be feeling some discomfort again.

Armando Obispo replaced Schouten, and Noa Lang went off halfway through the second half for Ivan Perisic. PSV had one eye on their match against Paris Saint Germain on Tuesday in the UEFA Champions League as they played the second half in first gear.

AZ did not suffer a defeat like last season and even got a goal back late on through Denso Kasius (1-2). The Alkmaarders have lost their last three league matches and are 11 points behind PSV.
