Only a year on from when Ajax shocked the football world with a strong Champions League performance cut short in the semi-finals by a a stoppage-time goal, the Amsterdam side exited the Europa League in the tournament’s first knockout stage Thursday night. AZ Alkmaar was also knocked out by Lask Linz meaning that there are no Dutch teams left in European competition.

Though the Amsterdam side beat Getafe 2-1 at the Johan Cruyff Arena, it was not enough to overcome the aggregate score following a 2-0 loss in the first leg against the Spanish outfit from Madrid.

An impending winter storm on Sunday prompted Dutch football association KNVB to suspend all matches that day. Four matches in the top level Eredivisie will be rescheduled, as well as the country's full slate of amateur football matches, the KNVB said on Saturday.

The Eredivisie matches include FC Utrecht vs. Ajax, AZ vs. Feyenoord, Sparta Rotterdam vs. ADO Den Haag, and FC Emmen vs. FC Twente.

AZ will also replace the roof above the main stand of the AFAS stadium, the club announced on Tuesday. Investigation launched after part of the stadium's roof collapsed in a storm in August showed that this part of the stadium's roof is also unsafe.

One person was killed, and separately a portion of the AFAS Stadion roof collapsed as heavy winds gripped the Netherlands on Saturday. Wind gusts in IJmuiden, at the North Sea coast, even topped 104 kilometers per hour.

A bicyclist died at about 2:30 p.m. in Linschoten, Utrecht, when the heavy winds toppled a tree, which sent it crashing down on a bike path along the Haardijk. The tree struck the victim, a 58-year-old man from Lopik, a town 15 kilometers away from the accident.

At least 37 people were arrested around the KNVB cup final between Feyenoord and AZ Alkmaar in Rotterdam's De Kuip stadium on Sunday. Feyenoord won the match 3-0. Football supporters damaged multiple trains heading towards Rotterdam, ProRail reports.

Football team AZ Alkmaar will introduce a new, all-red outfit for footballers playing in home matches, the team said on Wednesday. The outfit is a throwback to their 1981 championship season, and American firm Under Armour will produce the kit as part of a new deal with the team.

Newspapers in The Netherlands are bemoaning the loss of the Germany v. Netherlands World Cup Final this morning. Foreign headlines speak of disappointment, and swear it would be different if Tim Krul would have been subbed in before the fatal penalty shootouts that saw Argentina dominate and progress to the finals instead. 

A "lost dream", according to the Volkskrant. A "penalty drama", says the Algemeen Dagblad. Trouw called Wesley Sneijder unimpressive against Argentina.

PSV Eindhoven takes the lead in the Dutch league standings after a 5-0 win against NEC Nijmegen while Ajax was defeated (3-2) by AZ Alkmaar on Sunday.
