Video: Thick black smoke rises from scene of major fire at Amsterdam golf course
A major fire at the De Hoge Dijk golf complex in Amsterdam triggered warnings on Friday evening for heavy smoke development in the area. The fire was first reported at about 5:55 p.m., with emergency personnel staging along the Abcouderstraatweg in the city's Zuidoost district.
It was not immediately clear if there were any injuries. The blaze started in a shed, and spread to the adjacent home, the Amsterdam-Amstelland Fire Department said on social media. The fire was extinguished more than an hour later.
Heavy plumes of thick, black smoke could be seen rising from the scene. Those in the area were warned to close their windows and doors, and to shut off ventilation systems until the smoke dissipated.
About ten minutes after firefighters were dispatched to the scene, police officers and paramedics were also sent to the area. By 6:15 p.m., firefighters declared the incident to be a "very large fire," which brought more personnel from neighboring firehouses.
De Hoge Dijk sits right at the southeastern edge of Amsterdam, and is close to Abcoude. The golf center is at the provincial border between Noord-Holland and Utrecht.
The golf complex has a total of three nine-hole courses, two of which combine for an 18-hole competition course. The public course also has membership options, a training academy, a meeting center and restaurant, and a swimming hole.
