Thunderstorms expected as tropical heat gives way to cooler air across the Netherlands

After a weekend of tropical heat, the Netherlands will face a sharp shift in weather this week, with cooler sea air, intermittent rain, and a midweek return of summer temperatures that could trigger thunderstorms, according to the latest forecast by weeronline.

Following scorching conditions on Saturday, some coastal areas saw temperatures fall by nearly 10 degrees on Sunday, with highs of only around 20 degrees. This change marked the start of a broader transition to a cooler and more unsettled weather pattern driven by westerly winds pulling in air from over the sea.

On Monday, maximum temperatures are expected to range from 19 degrees in the north to 22 degrees in central parts of the country. A moderate to fairly strong west wind will keep the air feeling noticeably cooler than over the weekend.

Showers are expected on Monday morning, with unsettled conditions continuing into Tuesday. Rain will fall intermittently across much of the country, particularly in the northern half, which is expected to see the highest rainfall totals. Despite the rain, southern regions may briefly reach 25 degrees if there is enough sunshine.

The cooler period will be short-lived. On Wednesday, the wind will shift back to southern directions and weaken, allowing summer heat to return. Highs above 30 degrees are likely again in the south, and much of the country will experience warm and sunny conditions during the day.

However, the warm weather could come at a price. Thunderstorms may develop Wednesday evening, and the night into Thursday is expected to be relatively warm.

On Thursday, the risk of showers remains, and temperatures will begin to dip again, with daily highs mostly between 20 and 25 degrees. Forecast confidence for Friday and the weekend is lower, but current weeronline models suggest dry periods will dominate from Friday onward. By the weekend, there is reportedly a chance of summer-like warmth returning across the Netherlands.
